Red Candle Games Launches New Nine Sols Trailer, Crowdfunding Site
Red Candle Games, a Taiwanese video game developer behind horror titles like Detention and Devotion, has started crowdfunding its next game, Nine Sols.
Previously announced by Nine Sols, the team described it as “a journey of Asian fantasy inspired by Sekiro, Hollow Knight and Katana Zero.” It’s also a “legendary-rich, hand-drawn” 2D action-platformer with a focus on combat bias. Red Candle also promises immersive storytelling and Nine Sols’ unique “Taopunk” setting. Think Cyberpunk meets Taoism and Far Eastern mythology.
Red Candle writes on its crowdfunding website that “we want to build a polished Taopunk world that blends cyberpunk/sci-fi elements with Taoist and dramatic Easter myths,” the studio writes.
The team also says they are attempting to “recreate the bias-focused Sekiro combat experience in 2D and combine it with classic side-scrolling exploration”. Visually, Nine Sols incorporates hand-crafted anime and manga-influenced art and is set to score “dark electronic sounds mixed with oriental instruments”.
In Nine Sols, players follow a hero’s quest to kill the Nine Sols, rulers of this abandoned realm, exploring lands that were once home to an ancient alien race.
Red Candle’s website has tons of additional information about Nine Sols. Seriously, there’s a history of the story, combat mechanics including gifs that show real-world situations, details and art about the Taopunk world, and even the words the game expects. Available on PlayStation consoles, Nintendo consoles, and PCs. Red Candle recognizes that Nine Sol’s development is “between console generations” and has not given a platform name because “it is difficult to provide a definitive list of currently supported platforms”.
Red Candle wants to raise NT$3 million, which is about $106,000 USD. We’ve already raised 81% of that.
Red Candle’s website said, “Ninesol has been a project that Red Candle has been working on for over two years. “We were fully committed to this project because we started actually looking at a prototype of this game a few months after the release of Devotion. We want to make it clear that the crowdfunding campaign will not change the fate of Ninesol. This means you will do your best to complete the game regardless of the outcome.
In fact, the main goal of this campaign is to get feedback from you. As always, our main concern is what you, the player, think of our game.”
