Codemasters Studio merged with Criterion to develop new Need For Speed
Codemasters Cheshire was absorbed by Criterion Games to develop a new Need For Speed game.
In March 2021, EA announced it was delaying its next Need For Speed game from 2021 to 2022 so that Criterion and DICE can focus on developing Battlefield 2042. Then earlier this week, EA revealed in its financial results that it expected a new Need For Speed release this year, with four unknown games slated for release between January 2023 and March 2023. Now there is an update. About the future of franchising
Codemasters confirmed in a series of tweets that “the development team at Criterion Games and Codemasters Cheshire is officially working together to shape the future of Need for Speed, forming one Criterion studio with two location hubs.” is based on the close partnership that the two studios have developed over the past few months. As we share common values and a similar culture, integrating our vast expertise across both teams is essential to providing our athletes with the best racing experience possible. I am sure it will help.”

Now, as seen in the tweet above, Criterion is working on Need For Speed, which is expected to launch this year, not to mention Codemasters. It wouldn’t be surprising if this new studio team is doing just that, but as it stands in this tweet, the merged studio seems to be looking into the future of the Need For Speed franchise.
Personally, I’d like to see a return to the Underground series in the future, or maybe a remaster of the first Underground. Everything you need to hear Lil Jon’s “Get Low” again while driving through a neon-lit night city, frankly.
