Assassin's Creed Valhalla, file resizing next week, full re-download required
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is getting considerably smaller with a new update next week. In terms of content, it will remain the same, but the file size of the game will be reduced on all platforms thanks to data reconstruction.
Title Update 1.4.1 significantly reduces the space required to install Valhalla by ‘consolidating game files to reduce overall game size on all platforms’. The Xbox Series X is the biggest winner here, with a massive 44GB of space for gaming. A developer post on the Ubisoft forums lists numbers for each platform, including the download size of the update and the overall space savings achieved.
In addition to freeing up space on your hard drive or SSD after 1.4.1, Valhalla offers ‘faster loading screen times, improved world data streaming and overall runtime performance’ compared to previous versions.
If you notice the download size is huge, you know it’s huge! This update will require a re-download of the entire base game, so plan accordingly to avoid unexpectedly exceeding your data limit. Fortunately, the DLC doesn’t affect the update process.
Here’s data from Ubisoft’s forum post:
Download size from 1.4.0 to 1.4.1:
-
PC ~78GB
-
PS4 ~67GB
-
PS5 ~ 40GB
-
X1 ~ 62GB
-
XS ~ 71GB
1.4.1 Disk space used after installation:
-
PC ~77GB
-
PS4 ~75GB
-
PS5 ~ 77GB
-
X1 ~ 63GB
-
XS ~ 72GB
Disk space saved after rebase:
-
PC ~34GB
-
PS4 ~ 30GB
-
PS5 ~ 13GB
-
X1 ~ 30GB
-
XS ~ 44GB
It’s a bit odd to see a full data reconstruction pushed back to a game that’s been out for over a year, but it’s also a welcome sight with the game’s expansive size. The potential to reduce the game size by a third is commendable and we hope it will be considered much earlier in the development process for future games.
